US Space Force Dominates In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Charity Event
The USAA recently hosted the annual C.O.D.E Bowl in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. During this competition, the United States Armed Forces and branches of the UK military battled it out in a round-based Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War tournament. Proceeds from the competition went towards the Call of Duty Endowment project, which places veterans in post-military careers that fully utilize their skill sets.
While there were definite crowd favorites, the tournament took an unexpected turn, as an underdog team managed to win the tournament. After defeating the other military services in brutal Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War combat, Space Force overtook the Royale Air Force in the finals and brought home a well-deserved win.
The win took many by surprise as Space Force is the US military's newest independent service branch. Founded in 2019, the organization is still young and does not have an official Esports team. In the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War tournament, each service branch provided a team of four active duty service members. While some branches hold dedicated esports teams, others drafted in-house players through elimination based tournaments. Each team was then coached by a "high-profile" civilian player or streamer such as Huskerrs and Symfuhny. These civilian coaches advised the teams in real-time during each round of the tournament.
The Call of Duty Endowment tournament's goal was to raise money that will be used on unemployed military veterans. Activision Blizzard has donated over $38 million to the organization, and the Call of Duty Endowment has publically stated its goal of putting 100,000 veterans back into the workforce by 2024.
In the tournament bracket, Space Force was considered an underdog competitor. Barely a year old, this is the first time that the military branch has won anything competitive against the other services. This win sets a foundation for the organization and will stand as a shining star on their brand new military record.
The Call of Duty esports teams' goal in the US military is to connect with younger audiences and help them see soldiers differently. The many esports teams are designed as community outreach efforts, and the US army claims that it has no intention of recruitment in their directives. Seeing the armed forces compete in the esports community is a validating experience for many, as the US military branches are highly respected across the nation.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
