Pokemon GO Announces Celebration Event to Follow Kanto Tour
Pokemon GO has been gearing up for Pokemon's 25th Anniversary this year with its own slew of events. Most recently, Trainers have been prepping for the upcoming Kanto Tour, which is the first in-game event featuring two distinct versions in honor of the original mainline titles, Pokemon Red and Green.
While the ticketed global Kanto Tour promises players a virtual journey across Kanto and its 151 native species, it seems that Pokemon GO is ready to keep the Kanto-themed train going for a bit longer after the Tour. As part of these recently announced "festivities," players will continue to celebrate Kanto through a series of in-game bonuses.
The new Kanto-themed festivities will begin just as the Pokemon GO Tour: Kanto wraps up, and last until Pokemon Day. The event starts on Sunday, February 21 at 10:00 a.m., and ends on Saturday, February 27 at 8:00 p.m. (local time).
Some of the Pokemon GO Tour: Kanto Collection Challenges will continue through the duration of this following event, but otherwise it will feature a new set of Kanto Pokemon in Raids, Eggs, and the wild.
The following Pokemon will be featured throughout the event period:
- Appearing More Frequently in the Wild - Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Weedle, Pikachu, Geodude, Clefairy, Psyduck, Slowpoke, Gastly, Voltorb, Magikarp, and more*
- Attracted to Incense - Caterpie, Pidgey, Spearow, Poliwag, Abra, Seel, Machop, Krabby, Exeggcute, Horsea, Goldeen, and more*
- Hatching from 5 km Eggs - Oddish, Bellsprout, Tangela, Dratini, Pichu, Elekid, Magby, and more*
* This is the language used by Niantic's official announcement. Any additional Pokemon are currently unconfirmed.
Given the Kanto Tour will be introducing all 151 Kanto Pokemon Shiny forms, players should expect all of the above to be available as Shiny in the wild. However, it's unlikely any of them will exhibit a particularly boosted "Shiny Rate."
The following Pokemon will be appearing in Raid Battles:
- One-star Raids - Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, Magikarp, and Dratini
- Three-star Raids - Scyther, Pinsir, Machoke, Kadabra, Haunter, Graveler, and Lapras
- Five-star Raids - Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Mewtwo
All of these Pokemon should be available as Shiny in Raids, except for Stage 1 evolutions Machoke, Kadabra, Haunter, and Graveler. That being said, this is merely speculation based on the usual Pokemon GO trends, and is subject to change.
Last but certainly not least, the following Pokemon will learn Community Day-exclusive moves if evolved during this Kanto "Celebration" event:
- Ivysaur (Venusaur - Frenzy Plant)
- Charmeleon (Charizard - Blast Burn)
- Wartortle (Blastoise - Hydro Cannon)
- Pichu (Pikachu - Surf)
- Eevee (Any available evolution - Last Resort)
- Dragonair (Dragonite - Draco Meteor)
Players can choose to evolve newly caught/hatched Pokemon for these Community Day-exclusive moves, but savvy Trainers will likely be using this opportunity to finally evolve powerful or high-stat powerhouses like Blastoise that shine with Community Day moves. However, some Pokemon like Dragonite may thrive more with standard moves, such as Outrage. Nonetheless, they'll be freely available during the event; and with the ability to learn additional moves, players can now learn these exclusives without forgoing more possible alternatives.
Pokemon GO is available now on the App Store and Google Play.
