'Nobody' Should Miss This John Wick-Style Action Thriller
Never underestimate a nobody. In Bob Odenkirk's new movie Nobody directed by Ilya Naishuller, he plays a man named Hutch that doesn't get the respect he thinks he deserves. This is an action-packed film with a lot of build-up and character development. It is perfect for anyone who likes a story about taking charge and fighting back, with a slew of fists and guns-a-blazing.
Nobody is about a man whose home is broken into, and he is unable to defend it or protect his family. It is another one of those films where a seemingly normal, suburban guy turns out to actually be pretty badass and tough. This film has got a similar vibe to the John Wick and Taken movies. The main character, Hutch, has a showdown with some guys—the same guys who invaded his home. He feels like he let his family down and decides to go after them. He wants to teach them a lesson with his fists because his rage is boiling after the incident with his house. But, as it turns out, these guys aren't just some random bullies picking on the little nobodies and are actually tied in with some powerful Russian gangsters. Now, those powerful Russians are coming after Hutch and will realize he might not be so weak after all.
Bob Odenkirk does a phenomenal job in the role as Hutch. His acting is believable and powerful. Most people will know Bob Odenkirk from his role as Saul Goodman in the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul tv shows—which equally display his acting chops. He definitely commands the screen and there is not a dull moment with him in this movie. Although the story has a lot of build-up, it is still very thrilling to watch. Hutch is a sad man who feels like his life is unfulfilling when he gets taken advantage of, but he's had enough and will take his rage out on those who seek to do him and his family harm.
Because of Hutch's background, he has abilities that no one would think he has. This film is about him getting back in his groove and making sure no one underestimates him again. Hutch's past isn't revealed right away and is hinted at throughout the film. This movie is a perfect mix of action and story, so it is a must-see for everyone since it has a little bit of everything an audience member could want in the action or thriller genres. The film isn't just a mindless barrage of action though, but when the action sequences hit, they hit hard. What is happening on the screen becomes more important and urgent thanks to the storyline.
There are a couple of scenes where the framing and camera angles really draw viewers into the action. The editing is done really well and makes Nobody stand out. The soundtrack in this movie is catchy and adds a lot of style to the film as well. This isn't necessarily an original plot, but Bob Odenkirk's lively and at times comedic performance is so good that it makes Nobody seem like its own thing. The twist of how the character Hutch can do what he does isn't very surprising or unique, but it adds a small mystery that can help keep the interest of some viewers.
This movie is very violent and at times horrific. It walks a fine line of shocking and therefore engaging, and something so over the top that it becomes comedic. If Quentin Tarantino and modern movie trends have taught the world anything, it's that sometimes a movie needs to be shocking to be remembered. People might want to see the same story again, but they want it in a different way that makes it more engaging than the last time it was told.
Bob Odenkirk's character doesn't start off as a flawless badass, though. The movie is realistic in the way that it shows this older middle-aged man is not as strong and able as he once was. He goes through a transition and it takes some time to get back into things. This shouldn't come easy to a person who has been out of this type of work for a while. There should be a period of time where the character, especially one of this age, has to re-learn skills they may have forgotten. The believability of the scenario allows the audience to put away their questions and enjoy the movie.
To put it simply, Nobody is made great through a combination of great acting by Bob Odenkirk, editing, and the familiar story with a twist done well. Although some of the other characters in the film may have been a little weak, these reasons make it a must-see. This movie will make people never underestimate a Nobody again.
