Former Halo Infinite Dev Clarifies Recent Comments About the Game

Conditions in the game development industry have been well documented and movements have begun to try to put a light on poor practices in the industry. The issues surrounding Halo Infinite have also been well documented, with gameplay being late and the release being pushed back to 2021. After originally making statements discussing similar conditions at 343 Industries, a former developer has walked back most of what they had said in a video posted online.

In a video posted to Bilibili, Eric Lin, a person claiming to be a former employee of 343 Industries, reported a series of different issues occurring in Halo Infinite, including crunch, cut content, and a myriad of other issues. The former developer went on to say that the game should still be good, but it won't be anything special.

Lin went on to originally say that the development team was being pushed with overtime and that upon leaving the company, was happy to be gone. Translations of the video (originally posted in Mandarin) have appeared on different message boards around the internet. However, according to the latest video posted by the same developer, they have claimed that any talk about crunch is incorrect, and has walked back many previous accusations.

With the latest video, Lin then goes on to say that any overtime for the game has been completely voluntary and that 343 Industries has been entirely fair about the game. He goes on to say that the content cut from Halo Infinite shouldn't be seen in a negative light, as this is just a common industry occurrence. This information all comes as a contradiction to what was originally posted by himself previously.

While the practices of the company are unclear, Lin's videos are now seen in a different light. It's unclear if 343 Industries is actually promoting poor practices or the opposite. With the strong words initially being walked back, many are curious to know if Lin was contacted by anyone, or if he made the decision to rethink his own words.

Halo Infinite is slated to be released this fall, and with all the stir caused by Lin's comments, it will be interesting to see what type of game will be released. It also remains to be seen what type of conditions are actually being implemented at 343 Industries, and whether the conditions have grown toxic. Lin does stand by his claim that the game will be good, but how good of a game remains to be seen.

Halo Infinite is expected to be released in Fall 2021 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
