Harry Potter Crosses The Pond In Americanized Deepfake
There are very few franchises throughout history that have gained as much recognition and commercial success as Harry Potter. That’s why back at the turn of the millennium when the Harry Potter films were entering pre-production so much speculation arose regarding who would play such a magical cast.
However, thanks to the technological spells of today and deepfake videos, it is now possible to imagine what almost anyone would have looked like in any role from the past. In Harry Potter’s case, it enables a Time-Turner experience across the world that allows for some wild faceswaps while also robbing the very British cast of their English accents to make for what would certainly be an entirely different movie.
YouTuber Race Archibold decided to take matters into his own hand and basically substituted every grownup character from the franchise with American actors, and admittedly some are actually instant fits, save for the accent of course. For example, it’s hard to argue against Morgan Freeman’s sweet narrator voice making for a great Professor Dumbledore, Meryl Streep can play anything so Minerva McGonagall is well within her talents; yet, on the other hand, some simply feel a bit out of place, like having the still too young Adam Driver sit in for the late Alan Rickman, or even more oddly Nicholas Cage make Voldemort even more creepy that Ralph Fiennes did.
Naturally, given deepfakes require exactly the kind of expensive GPUs that are so scarce right now, this Harry Potter montage is not capable of putting a mustache on Superman, but it’s still good enough to entice one’s imagination to think how Harry Potter would look like if the 9 and three-quarters train were to leave from Grand Central Station in New York.
Clearly, some of these are incredibly comical takes on the Harry Potter universe because Jason Momoa as Hagrid is just too out there, but who’s to say Mad-Eye Moody couldn’t use some good old Samuel L. Jackson cursing and Keanu Reeves wouldn’t be the perfect uncle for Harry. Bod Odenkirk already played an old action hero in Nobody, so Remus Lupin isn’t far from his scope.
Nowadays, the Fantastic Beasts saga, Lego games, and Harry Potter theme parks remain the closest link to the world imagined by J.K. Rowling, but with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite soon to launch on mobile, fans might get to live out their Hogwarts dreams in a new way. Those eager for Hogwarts Legacy will just have to wait longer.
