Will There Be More Pokemon Eeveelutions After Sylveon?
As far as well-known Pokemon go, Eevee is by far one of the most popular and well-known Pocket Monsters in the entire Pokemon franchise. This can be further evidenced with the release of the recent Pokemon: Let’s Go! games Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! The Normal-type Pokemon, Eevee, has been around since the first generation of Pokemon, but later generations have added different types of evolutions of Eevee, typically referred to as “Eeveelutions” in the Pokemon community.
Right now, there are 18 different types of Pokemon across every generation released so far. Out of the 18 different types, the current Eeveelutions cover 8 of them, plus Eevee is a Normal-type Pokemon. That means only half of the Pokemon types have been explored with Eevee’s evolutions. Sylveon recently made its Pokemon GO debut, having originally debuted in Pokemon’s Gen 6 lineup. Pokemon is currently in Gen 8 and it’s been a while since Sylveon was introduced, so will there be any new Eeveelutions in the upcoming Pokemon generations?
As it stands now, there are 8 different types of Eeveelution: Fire, Water, Electric, Psychic, Dark, Ice, Grass, and Fairy. Pokemon players will all have their favorites, but each Eeveelution is powerful in its own way. The way to evolve Eevee into its different evolutions varies on the type players are hoping to achieve, though the methods vary between Pokemon games and Pokemon GO. Where the original Pokemon games sometimes require stones to help Eevee evolve, Pokemon GO is a bit different and even has a name trick that players can use for the desired Eeveelution.
Different names correspond to the type of Eevee evolution players are hoping to achieve, but that trick can only be used once per Eeveelution. Otherwise, Pokemon GO players either rely on luck of the draw or have to fulfill certain criteria to evolve Eevee into any of its evolutionary forms. The Eeveelutions in Pokemon GO encapsulate all previous generations, meaning every single one is now in-game:
- Flareon
- Vaporeon
- Jolteon
- Espeon
- Umbreon
- Glaceon
- Leafeon
- Sylveon
Criteria to evolve Eevee into Espeon or Umbreon involves doing things like walking so many kilometers with them as a buddy and evolving them during the day or night. Evolving Eevee to Sylveon in Pokemon GO requires using a certain name, but once players have done that the only other way to evolve Eevee to Sylveon requires earning 70 buddy hearts with Eevee.
Despite there already being 8 different Eeveelutions, there’s lots of untapped potential regarding new Pokemon types to use for a new Eevee evolution. Eevee currently doesn’t have any evolutions for 9 different types:
- Fighting
- Poison
- Ground
- Flying
- Bug
- Rock
- Ghost
- Dragon
- Steel
While it’s easy to hypothesize that Pokemon will inevitably make an Eeveelution for every Pokemon type, it might not be that simple. There’s a good chance that some Pokemon types won’t get Eevee evolutions because it wouldn’t make sense design-wise. For example, Bug-type, Flying-type, or Dragon-type Eeveelutions wouldn’t make sense because it could fundamentally change the prototype Eevee already has set up. Each Eeveelution has retained the fundamental design of an Eevee by having unique ears, a unique tail, and remaining on four legs.
While a Bug-type could fit in with this, it’s difficult to envision what a Bug-type Eevee would look like. A Flying-type Eevee would probably require wings in its design and while it wouldn’t be unheard of, it would definitely be strange to see alongside the other Eeveelutions. Oppositely, it’s quite easy to envision a Steel-type Eeveelution (though it wouldn’t be as cuddly as the others), as well as a Poison-type or Ghost-type Eevee.
For now, there’s no indication that any more Eeveelutions are expected in future Pokemon generations, but that’s not to say they won’t happen, either. Players can always pick their favorite Eeveelution and get to utilize them throughout various Pokemon games, especially now that Sylveon is newly inducted into Pokemon GO.
Pokemon GO is available now for mobile.
