Anton's Speeches in Far Cry 6 Might Finally Rival FC3's Vaas
E3 2021 has finally started, and surprises seem to keep coming at a consistent pace, with an Elden Ring reveal trailer during Summer Game Fest being the standout highlight for many so far. The latest Ubisoft Forward conference revealed a new trailer for Far Cry 6, which has fans excited to meet Anton Castillo in Yara later this year.
The newest trailer showcases the star of the game, Giancarlo Esposito's Anton Castillo, board a ship in an effort to seek out his son Diego Castillo. He delivers a short but great monologue to the rebels, making a bold statement that there is no escape from Yara. While there's still some ambiguity regarding how Far Cry 6 pans out ultimately, it seems that Anton might finally give some tough competition to Vaas.
Far Cry 3's Vaas Montenegro is a completely unpredictable man of his own ways, and Michael Mondo's portrayal of the character is so strong and energetic that it commands full attention from the player whenever he's on-screen. He might not make much sense at all times, but his definitions of insanity are delivered in such an honest matter that it remains engaging and captivating.
On the other hand, Giancarlo Esposito's Anton Castillo is an iron-fisted tyrant with a single goal to restore Yara to its former glory. Much like Far Cry 5's Joseph Seed, Anton believes in a self-made prophecy that only his family has the power to earn redemption for Yara. Much like Far Cry 3's Vaas, Anton relies on analogies to convey his thoughts and ambitions, as evidenced by the speech about the fish in the latest trailer.
Both of these characters seem to be quite different in a lot of aspects, but their engaging persona is definitely the standout highlight, which makes them comparable. However, Anton's single-point program to liberate Yara in Far Cry 6 does give him an edge over the hot-headed Vaas, who just does things in ways he deems fit because he can.
Far Cry 6 seems to be heading in a different direction when it comes to narrative tone, ditching the survival roots towards tackling themes of resistance and revolution against an oppressive tyrant. The tyrant in question, Anton Castillo, is at the epicenter of what's happening in Yara, and by all means, should surpass the heights reached by Michael Mondo's performance as Vaas in Far Cry 3.
Vaas Montenegro is certainly a great character, but his lack of ambition does hurt in many ways when inspected closely. He's more akin to Batman's The Joker in some ways, as his motivations to pursue his killings are solely fueled by a drive to see the world burn. On the other hand, Anton Castillo does what he thinks to the best for Yara's future, even if that means going against the will of his common folk. While his actions might not always be justifiable, there's some sense of understanding and sympathy attached with these motivations that have the ability to make him surpass Vaas.
Far Cry 6 launches October 7, on Amazon Luna, PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
