June 2021's Free PS Plus Game for PS5 is Something Very Different
One advantage those who have managed to hunt down and purchase a PS5 is exclusive free games on PS Plus. Every month practically since the PS5's release, the subscription service has rotated in games that are exclusive to the new generation's hardware. It should be noted that, at least in some cases, PS4 owners can claim the games themselves, they just can't play them until they upgrade.
Given that its competitor in terms of style, Xbox Games with Gold, has only provided one Xbox Series X game over the last few months, it's a stand out feature to really push PS Plus as Sony's best service. The best part is its recent pattern: mass appeal with a variety of genres. It's been working a lot lately, but even with that in mind, the PS5 game released for PS Plus in June 2021 is something completely different.
Since November 2020, there have been 25 games released for PS Plus. Of those, only 9 have been native to the PS5 while 7 have only been playable on the PS5 (at least in the version released). These 7 games include Bugsnax, Maneater, Destruction AllStars, Maquette, Oddworld: Soulstorm, Wreckfest, and Operation: Tango.
Each stands out from the other, but Operation: Tango has something a little different going for it. In terms of variety though, it fits right in with how Sony aims for some spice in every release. Bugsnax is a cutesy adventure game that's great for children (as well as adults, of course), while Maneater is an action RPG that is not great for children but lets adults live out their Jaws fantasies. Destruction Allstars is a vehicle-based multiplayer game, while Maquette is a single-player puzzle game. Oddworld: Soulstorm is a new take on a classic, while Wreckfest is a solid racing game for current gen hardware. Again, each of these games stand out, but they have some similarities here and there: cars, RPG elements, niche and cutesy approaches. Operation: Tango, though, goes its own way.
On every level, Operation: Tango stands out as a free PS Plus game for PS5. First, it's a online co-op-only game. Co-op games are becoming more rare, but while it may not be couch co-op, it's refreshing to see a co-op game getting some PS Plus love. None of the other games really explore how popular co-op games can be, as proven by It Takes Two and other co-op titles. At the same time, graphics on PS5-released PS Plus games have swayed between cutesy and out there like Bugsnax and Destruction Allstars to rather serious such as Wreckfest.
Operation: Tango finds a sweet spot inbetween where stylistically it's different from the other games, but it's not cutesy or overtly serious. It's something that benefits the gameplay and helps bring the differences between Operation: Tango and any of the aforementioned games to life. If its inclusion proves anything, it's that Sony's spice of life approach really works wonders in terms of getting more games out there with PS Plus.
PS Plus subscribers get a handful of free games every month.
