New Nintendo Switch Console Seemingly Leaked by GameStop
For several weeks now, rumors of an improved Nintendo Switch console have flooded the internet from every direction. Everything from the new Switch's specs to its name and its price to its exclusive games have been rumored and debated, but the latest leak may add some credence to a couple of rumors. What's worth mentioning first is that Nintendo has given no acknowledgement to these rumors, so its existence is still entirely up in the air.
GameStop opened up a new trade-in promotion today, which runs all the way until June 19. Looking over the righthand side shows how much credit players could receive when trading in a console they currently own, with the PS5 receiving $350 dollars in credit while the Nintendo Switch Lite will receive $150. The notable part, however, is the stipulations to receive $50 extra credit when trading in for certain consoles.
The aforementioned console selection includes the purchase of a New Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Xbox Series X/S, with "New Nintendo Switch" also reiterated in the fine print. A ton of names have been tossed around for the Switch upgrade, include the Switch Pro, Switch Advance, Super Switch, and more, but GameStop has seemingly leaked that it will fall under that name instead. New Nintendo Switch as a name has been rumored too, and it doesn't fall outside of Nintendo's naming conventions either (see New Pokemon Snap.)
What adds validity to this rumor is the overall presentation of this promotion. In two days, Nintendo will be hosting its E3 direct, and the timing cannot be a coincidence for a reveal by then, if not there. Nintendo has said it would be focused on software, but stranger things have happened. Perhaps more importantly, though, is how the Switch (v1,v2--the one with a better battery) is clarified in-print, as well as the Nintendo Switch Lite. In other words, it's not likely a capitalization error to mean a new Switch, but that the name itself is New Nintendo Switch, differentiated at least twice in such a short ad.
Now, of course this could mean absolutely nothing, but it wouldn't be the first time a retailer has leaked information about the Nintendo Switch upgrade. It's unlikely this sort of very specific and repeated mistake is just a misprint or anything like that, though. If "New Nintendo Switch" is just a placeholder and the name is false, then at the very least this could be an indication that GameStop is aware of the need for a placeholder for an upcoming console pre-order. GameStop has been preparing for a big E3 pre-order week, after all, and while it could mean something else entirely, it seems unlikely such an ad would go so far without something to back it up.
The New Nintendo Switch is rumored to be in development.
