Nvidia Will No Longer Be Supporting Windows 7 or 8 | Game Rant
When it comes to GPU tech, there are basically two companies that have cornered the market: AMD and Nvidia. While the world waits for chip shortages to rectify themselves, so people can actually buy some new hardware, there is now talk that the latter company is going to cease offering support for older versions of Windows going forward, which could spell bad news for some users.
In a post uploaded to the official Nvidia website recently, the tech mogul has announced that as of October 2021, its proprietary Game Ready drivers for its products will be exclusive to Windows 10 users. While security updates will still be available for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 until 2024, the company will be dropping support for these older versions of the ubiquitous operating system.
Nvidia, which recently said it would be bringing DLSS support to Linux systems, will still be supporting previous versions of Windows for the meantime. The post says that Game Ready drivers will still be available until the end of August 2021, with the first patch that will only support Windows 10 going live on October 4. This means that those who are still using the older operating systems can still get Game Ready Driver upgrades for the time being, but there is a definite timeline for when this will come to an end.
This is generally typical for the tech industry. Companies frequently push forward into more up-to-date territory which, unfortunately, for those who are still using older hardware or software, means that there will be those who miss out on new upgrades from the big conglomerates. Speaking of Windows upgrades, Microsoft recently stated that news about what's next for Windows would be coming soon in a livestream scheduled for June 24. Whether this will be something along the lines of Windows 11 remains to be seen, but hopefully all will be revealed at the event.
Overall, it's important to state that while Nvidia are ending Game Ready support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1., this is arguably down to the fact that Microsoft itself has also dropped support for these operating systems. Going forward, the GPU chip manufacturer is seemingly wanting to look towards the future by offering official support for products like its latest GeForce RTX 3080 Ti which does mean leaving older software behind. Sadly, this is simply the way technology seems to work, but for the meantime, users of older versions of Windows will still get security updates for a brief period.
