Thor: Love And Thunder Will Show A New Side Of Karen Gillan's Nebula
Guardians Of The Galaxy blew fans away with its rambunctious cast of characters when it debuted in 2014. One of those standout characters was Karen Gillan's Nebula, the angrier, right-hand daughter of Thanos. Fans have watched Nebula evolve emotionally over the course of four Marvel films, and Gillan is now promising a whole new side of her character in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Nebula started off as the bitter, revenge-seeking adopted sister of Gamora (Zoe Saldana) in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film and grew to forgive and make amends with her sister in the second film. She even went on to help the Avengers secure the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Endgame, sealing her status as a villain-turned-hero in the Marvel universe. While Nebula started out as a second-tier villain in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, she has evolved and had one of the most redeeming character arcs through her run in the MCU.
Now that Thor: Love and Thunder has recently wrapped filming, Gillan is revealing that working with director Taika Waititi "brought out the bonkers side" of Nebula and the "really funny and bonkers and wild" side of the rest of the cast. Gillan has been playing Nebula for 8 years now, so it's safe to say she knows the blue-hued character well enough to make such a claim. What "bonkers" means is hard to tell, but she clarified to Collider that if Nebula is funny in the film it's probably because of her seriousness and the "pure aggression" they've tapped into with the character. While it isn't clear how big of a role Nebula or any of the other Guardians will play, on-set photos for Thor: Love and Thunder did confirm that Gillan, Chris Pratt, and Sean Gunn will appear in the film.
Waititi will be the third director to tackle Nebula's story as part of the large ensemble of Marvel films. James Gunn first brought the character to life in the first two Guardians films before the torch was passed to directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo for Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Between all the rumors of Marvel guest appearances and Pratt confirming Thor 4 will be "next level," the God of Thunder's newest film already has fans hyped. Details on the plot are still being kept quiet, but it is confirmed that Natalie Portman will be returning to the franchise as Jane Foster, Christian Bale will star as villain Gorr the God Butcher, and, strangely enough, Melissa McCarthy and Matt Damon will be playing actor versions of Hela and Loki.
Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to release in theaters on May 6, 2022.
