How to Beat Spec Ops Missions in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developed by Infinity Ward is a re-imagining of the 2007 title of the same name and developer. While 2019’s Modern Warfare made many new changes to the original game, like with the title’s campaign story line which caused a bit of controversy during Modern Warfare's launch, the title still kept faithful to a lot of things from the series’ history. Though Spec Ops missions weren’t in the 2007 title, they’ve been brought back from recent iterations and revamped for Modern Warfare.

In 2019’s Modern Warfare, Spec Ops is meant to be seen as a continuation of the game’s campaign. Spec Ops mode now consists of a four player co-op format, where a group of players tackles certain operations. Additionally, Spec Ops mode also has various missions that are known to be seriously difficult challenges.

The first thing players need to think about when tackling a mission in Spec Ops is what loadout they’ll be bringing with them, especially when considering obstacles like Juggernauts. Certain weapons and equipment will fare well in certain situations, but players also need to consider what the rest of their team is bringing into the mission. Finding a good balance in weapon range among team members is key to succeeding in Spec Ops missions.

For specific weapons, the best shotgun in Spec Ops missions will probably be the R9-0, as it’s going to be the best bet for dealing with the tanky juggernaut enemies which need to be brought down as fast as possible. For mid-range weapons, the M4A1 Assault Rifle was, and remains, one of the most balanced guns in the game. Think of it like the 'Mario' of weapons for Modern Warfare, meaning it will likely serve any player well, regardless of skill, situation, or familiarity.

For more niche weapons, Light Machine Guns are a bit unwieldy for inexperienced players, but they’re effective at mowing through waves of enemies and holding ground. The Dragunov Sniper Rifle is a great rifle for Spec Ops missions, as it’s semi-automatic rifle that’s great for mid-range situations while being accurate and powerful enough to get the job done. Finally, the oft-overlooked Riot shield is another great weapon to take down Juggernauts with, as Juggernauts will focus on players using a Riot Shield, leaving them wide open to attacks from other players.

In Spec Ops missions, munitions are like killstreaks in multiplayer. However, instead of earning them through kills, players earn them through racking up a certain amount of points. Despite what some may think, the free munitions that are unlocked by default are arguably the best to make use of because they can be re-used over and over again. The free munitions are Grenade, Ammo, and Armor crates which give players quick, renewable resources.

The best roles to pick for Spec Ops missions really come down to personal play style. That being said, there are two clear roles that stick out above the others: the Medic Role and Assault Role. The Medic Role comes with the active ability Team Revive, which revives all downed teammates, and the passive ability Quick Revive which makes reviving downed players much faster than normal. The Assault Role is a much more offensive role. With active ability Team Stopping Power and the passive Fast Reload ability, this mode allows players to buff their teammates while dealing quick and steady damage all on their own.

While many Modern Warfare players only focus on the normal multiplayer, players definitely should not overlook Spec Ops missions. They’re fun challenges that further the game’s narrative and sometimes even drop references and hints to certain upcoming maps. Spec Ops missions also give players XP like a normal online match would.

Certain missions in Spec Ops also count towards double XP events, too. Though, at the time of writing Infinity Ward is currently investigating a bug with the current double XP event. While that issue is hopefully getting resolved, players might find some enjoyment in tackling Modern Warfare’s challenging yet rewarding Spec Ops mode.

Call of Duty: Modern War is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
