Sonic the Hedgehog Movie May Not Feature His Shoes | Game Rant

Sonic has never taken off his shoes. Not once in the near thirty years that he's been running around, going fast, have fans ever seen the blue blurs' feet.

This includes Sonic's first appearance, too. When he initially showed up on the scene, he already had his trademark, buckled sneakers snuggling his toes.

However, it looks like the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie might show what exactly the speedster's feet look like. Paramount Australia released a twenty-second teaser of the film online, and it reveals that Sonic will receive his sneakers from a little girl. Considering the movie will explore Sonic's time in his own world before his arrival into the human one, there should be a whole section where he won't have shoes on. This means the movie will have plenty of opportunities to reveal the hedgehog's feet.

On the other hand, the film could capitalize on Sonic's initial lack of shoes through a running joke. Fans have been creating memes of Sonic's unrevealed feet for years, so if the movie wanted to, it could make an inside joke about that by keeping Sonic's feet out of sight despite his shoes being off; it would probably work to great effect, too. Or, the movie could ignore the whole situation entirely and focus on more important things, like, being good enough to break the video game movie curse (for those that think Detective Pikachu didn't).

To clarify, Sonic's feet have been shown before, just never in any canon instances. Considering the fiasco revolving around the movie's original design of Sonic, it's probably safe to say that the movie isn't canon either and will, therefore, be another non-canon appearance of Sonic's feet if it decides to go that route. In fact, Takashi Iizuka -- the vice president of product development for Sonic the Hedgehog -- commented about Sonic not taking his shoes by simply saying, "Sonic doesn't take off his shoes (in canon)." This response goes to a question posed by Polygon, who asked it after witnessing the bizarre sight of Sonic surfing with his shoes on against Mario in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Fans should probably just consider Sonic's shoes to be as much a part of his body as the Pokemon Hitmonchan's boxing gloves are. Weird, yes, but from a company's perspective, why go through the trouble of designing feet for a character whose shoes and overall appearance are already iconic?

Sonic the Hedgehog will race into theaters February 14, 2020.
